Over the last month or so, I've started small, speculative positions on a couple companies that have one thing in common: large amounts of short interest. I don't doubt the utility of short interest on stocks; I agree with some more widely-read authors on this site ( QTR, for example) that shorts play a vital role in driving down the stocks of companies with serious problems. You won't find me jumping on board with HLF bulls, for example-- I tend to agree with QTR's short thesis.
