New insight into how Americans feel about stocks and other asset classes is provided in this Gallup poll that shows the fewest number of Americans own individual stocks, stock mutual funds, or stocks in their retirement plan since the survey began in 1999. Click to enlarge:

Another poll question reveals that real estate is still viewed as the best long-term investment among the general population, but, of the 54 percent that own stocks, housing ranks a close second behind equities.
