Recent credit card data breaches on large US retailers have raised awareness of how this is becoming a major issue. As a consumer, it really hasn't cost me more than the inconvenience of getting new cards issued to me out of the blue. Even when fraudulent charges materialized in the past, I was able to have them reversed with minimal effort. I may be the exception, and not the rule, but the data breaches have affected the retailers & credit card issuers more than it has the customer in most cases.
Either way, a more safe & secure method to pay at physical retail shops is needed. The retailers don't want the embarrassment it causes, and the credit card issuers...
