Summary

This is the third part of a 3 part series, where I will re-examine stocks [N=149] included in my earlier Seeking Alpha articles.

This third installment examines those stocks trading higher from the date when my I began researching them and posted results on Seeking Alpha.

Twelve of the N=53 firms (~23%) are trading higher, as of March 3, 2015; stocks trading lower or at the same price-per-share are listed in a table, but not addressed.

None of the n=12 firms (0%) are trading above their 52-week high.

This third and final installment completes my focus on recent “winners” in the marijuana sector.

Summarized results for all 3 parts of this series follows:

My Seeking Alpha articles, focusing on the marijuana sector, are posted here. This is the third of a 3 part series.

This article examines the "winners" from marijuana stocks listed in earlier Seeking Alpha articles [N=149]. "Losers" or those stocks trading at the same price-per-share are not addressed, but are included in the Appendix, for completeness.

Again, I do not compute the percentage increase for all of the sub-penny stocks and do not attempt to link very small increases (e.g., 3% or less) with any single event that the firm has publicly disclosed. In the case of the former, it is true that some individuals can profit from day-trading massive quantities (e.g., 300,000 shares or more) of these stocks. In the latter case, the percentage increase is so modest that it makes no sense for me to attempt to identify a single causal link to the increase in price-per-share. The beginning and ending event dates are, of course, arbitrary.

Some thoughts on the n=12 stocks increasing since I first listed and/or examined them follows:

1-Cannabis-Rx, Incorporated [2/1/2015]

Cannabis-Rx [CANA] closed on March 3, 2015, at $0.2003 per share, up (~24%) from $0.1615 per share on February 1, 2015. The February 1, 2015 measures appears to represent nothing more than an atypical low price-per-share, as seen, below, in a 3 month chart:

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

2-Zoned Properties, Incorporated [2/1/2015]

Zoned Properties [ZDPY] closed on March 3, 2015, at $30.00 per share, up (~11%) from $27.00 per share on February 1, 2015. This stock has very thin trading volume, and the first and last event dates explain the increase in the firm's price-per-share (see below, from Yahoo!Finance):

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

3-Global Hemp Group, Incorporated [2/6/2015]

Global Hemp Group [GBHPF] closed on March 3, 2015, at $0.02 per share, up (~32%) from $0.0151 per share on February 6, 2015. This stock was as high as $0.05 per share on February 18, 2015. No specific event appears to explain the increase in price-per-share.

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

4-MaryJane Group, Incorporated (The) [2/6/2015]

MaryJane Group [MJMJ] closed on March 3, 2015, at $0.13 per share, up (~30%) from $0.10 per share on February 6, 2015. There were news items on both of these event dates, but nothing that appears to be so compelling as to explain the increase in price-per-share:

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

5-Mountain High Acquisition Corporation [2/6/2015]

Mountain High Acquisition [MYHI] closed on March 3, 2015, at $0.17 per share, up (~6%) from $0.16 per share on February 6, 2015. There have been several news announcements and this firm's stock price bounces around quite a bit:

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

6-Peak Pharmaceuticals, Incorporated [2/6/2015]

Peak Pharmaceuticals [PKPH] closed on March 3, 2015, at $0.38 per share, up (~124%) from $0.17 per share on February 6, 2015. This February 23, 2015, news release appears to be responsible for the increase (from Yahoo!Finance, below). This is a very, very good gross margin percentage, and favorable measures in headlines tend to increase stock prices (this is a good thing to remember). Some firms fail to understand this and place the measure in the body of the news item, but not in the headline. This suggests that management understands, very clearly, what does and does not impact their stock price-per-share. However, the "run" may be over:

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

7-Vapor Corporation [2/6/2015]

Vapor Corporation [VPCO] closed on March 3, 2015, at $1.10 per share, up (~10%) from $1.00 per share on February 6, 2015. A Securities and Exchange Commission 8-K was filed on February 3, 2015, for an "in progress" merger. The stock price-per-share- peaked well above this level [$1.54], but did not "stick":

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

8-Naturally Splendid Enterprises Limited [2/9/2015]

Naturally Splendid Enterprises [NSPDF] closed on March 3, 2015, at $0.258 per share, up (~43%) from $0.18 per share on February 9, 2015. This stock has reached a very recent, new 52 week high and could move higher on news (below are from Yahoo!Finance):

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

9-Next Generation Metals Ordinary - New [2/9/2015]

Next Generation Metals Ordinary - New [NXTTF] closed on March 3, 2015, at $0.033 per share, up (~230%) from $0.01 per share on February 9, 2015. This stock is thinly traded (below from Yahoo!Finance):

Vaporbrands International [VAPR] closed on March 3, 2015, at $0.07 per share, up (~40%) from $0.05 per share on February 18, 2015. This stock bounces around a bit.

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

Vapor Hub International [VHUB] closed on March 3, 2015, at $0.0215 per share, up (~8%) from $0.02 per share on February 19, 2015. This stock price-per-share just tends to bounce around a bit.

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

12-Wee-Cig International Corporation [2/24/2015]

Wee-Cig International [WCIG] closed on March 3, 2015, at $0.0129 per share, up (~29%) from $0.01 per share on February 24, 2015. This stock price-per-share just tends to bounce around a bit.

Below is the 1 year chart for the firm's stock price:

Summary

As I conclude this 3 part series, identifying marijuana stock "winners," some very apparent patterns emerge:

1st - In general, the marijuana sector is down and to be avoided.

2nd - Some of these stocks might be good for those interested in day-trading (e.g., Vapor Hub International, a Vaporbrands International and Wee-Cig International). This is, however, not the focus of my work or interest and is risky (i.e., how low is low and how high is high?). Look at charts for these stocks for a variety of time periods before buying (e.g., 5 days, 1 month, 3 months, and so on).

3rd - The stocks doing well appear to be those involved in consumer products (e.g., Naturally Splendid Enterprises, Peak Pharmaceuticals, and the soft drinks stocks from Part II of this series). News releases of progress through distribution and toward the generation of sales to the consumer translate into revenues and gross profits, fundamental measures, and the market reacts favorably if the details suggest demand and pricing power.

4th - It is very clear that some firms possess great skill in and an understanding of just how to make their stock price increase, with news releases, even though some of these increases do not "stick." A steady stream of descriptive news releases of progress is best, as it produces less variance or volatility, even though some prices might increase in an over-reactive fashion, and not "stick," in the short-term.

It may be worthwhile to product a separate article, even more narrowly focused on some of the "winners" from this 3 part series, so that I can provide examples that can be "generalized." While I am focused on long-term buy-and-hold stocks, stocks that over-react to news do provide an opportunity to "trade your cost down" for a long-term hold.
