Summary

  • Investing in dividend growth stocks is not about exit points, momentum swings, relative strength or sector rotation.
  • Instead it is about studying fundamentals, selecting superior stocks and building a portfolio with a long-term horizon.
  • This week several companies provided their shareholders positive feedback with increased cash dividends.

It seems that every investing article ends with the same conclusion - you should be buying dividend stocks. Beyond the simple concepts, some of the writers are making really bad recommendations and cross-breeding dividend investing with their preferred form of investing.

Investing in dividend growth stocks is not about exit points, momentum swings, relative strength, sector rotation; instead it is about studying fundamentals, selecting superior stocks and building a portfolio with a long-term horizon. When we buy a dividend stock, we hope to hold it forever.

NEWT goes ex-dividend tomorrow. Today is the last day to capture the 47 cent dividend. I just purchased more.

4 life - I recently checked the most recent articles on CAH and UTX. My concern arises over the fair value figure in each of those articles because its nearly half of the share price at the time the article was written. I saw the reply, when one commenter brought the issue up - it indicated a conservative formula was used with no way to compare it with other fair value estimates like S&P and Morningstar. And I understand that. Its just that when I look at their other financials the fair value figures don't make very good sense to me.

So, I have difficulty with these fair value figures because they imply that each of these two companies are extremely overvalued in spite of a PE that's roughly within limits. In fact going back in UTX history 20 years, I'm unable to find a time when it's PE indicated an over valuation of nearly 50%.

The article fair value figures make me think we're just before the dot-com bust in 1999. Plenty of companies were extremely over valued then, but I'm sure UTX wasn't one of them.

The 4 Life website is a good one, so its surprising to see a disparity like this. I know formulas give us comfort (because it took time, testing and hard work to create that formula), but they can be deceiving unless their elements have some relation to reality. Could there be a small area where the formula used in these articles doesn't work?

Fair value disparities like this leave me wondering if I can rely on other calculations in these articles, yet I know better than that. Historically 4 life articles have proven their worth, and exhibit very sound concepts.

Is there something I'm overlooking?

I like the NEWT dividend of over 10%, I also like the appreciation in the stock price. It's up 38 cents today and more than 20% since I purchased in February.

Stocks yielding 1.0% and 1.2% are dividends in name only. No income-seeking investor should invest in such stocks.

Thanks for this article too. I basically have learned my lesson and am investing in good quality stocks that have a good history of paying dividends, however I do have a few that I bought, not too much money involved and one of them is NEWT. I have happy with the stock. My biggest disappointment is the utility and REITS. Actually only one of my REITS is a big disappointment and that is HCP, but will hold on because of their history.
