268 Marijuana Stocks: Learn From An Examination Of Event Dates For The Prior 52 Weeks

Summary

• The DOW was down 8.5% from record highs at the close on Monday, February 5, 2018; the public watches and reacts to the DOW.
• A partial recovery occurred on Tuesday, February 6, 2018; I started capturing data used for this article at the close of business on February 5, 2018.
• My equal-weighted portfolio has N=268 cannabis or marijuana stocks; using Fidelity, n=257 were usable when identifying 52 week highs and lows.
• I focus on the Jeff Sessions statements on February 23, 2017, the January effect, and the Jeff Session statements made on January 4, 2018.
• U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions made statements that “killed the rally,” but his statements were not powerful enough to establish new 52 week lows.

History Repeats

This article is designed to assist you with decision-making when deciding when to [1] enter, [2] exit, and [3] whether to hold through future statements made by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and [4] January Effects. I still anticipate an upward drift for the sector through [5] Canadian legalization and [6] U.S. Election Day ballot measures decriminalizing marijuana in several states. I continue to believe that you should [7] exit the sector after November 2018 elections in the U.S., and [8] re-enter in mid-to-late December 2018. (These recommendations can be modified as events unfold and in later Seeking Alpha articles).

We are in the midst of a market correction, and the new and growing marijuana sector has not matured, so stock prices are bouncing around quite a bit more than the general market, but I do not believe that a long-term investor can lose if they focus on buying and holding the big cap Canadian marijuana and cannabis stocks.

Some Descriptive Measures and Methodology

• My Seeking Alpha equal-weighted portfolio of N=268 stocks was down 12.3% for the week ending Monday, February 5, 2018.
• I used my Fidelity account to manually determine the 52 week high and 52 week low event date for each of the N=268 stocks, but this data was only retrievable for n=257 of these stocks.
• There were N=252 trading days during the period examined. I used the Excel file and related functions to sort these dates, separately, for 52 week highs and 52 week lows.
• I identified the 2 U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions event dates as February 23, 2017 and January 4, 2018, when he “killed” the cannabis or marijuana stocks rallies.
• It is a common practice to examine stock prices on trading days prior to and after event dates, when attempting to determine the impact of the event. In these cases, the event date is T=0. I am examining 10 trading days prior to and 10 trading days after T=0, so I am examining T=-10, T=-9,…,T=10, for a total of 21 trading days. Detailed data is in APPENDIX B. If you want to see a famous relatively contemporary study that probably took at least a few hundred hours to complete, see this one. I simplified mine to take much less time.
• 74 new highs [74÷252=29%] occurred during the 21 trading days included in the first event date at T-0. 83 new highs [ 83÷252=33%] occurred during the 21 trading days including the second event date at T=0. Using a uniform distribution, I would have expected to see only ~8% [21 new highs and new lows identified ÷ by 252 trading days] during these periods.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words – Jeff Sessions Event Dates

It took me a little bit of time to construct the below in Excel, but they are included in the Excel file that you can request. I am trying to capture quite a few things in a single exhibit, so slow down as you read the below. I have provided quite a bit of quantitative data in APPENDIX B for the folks that like to see descriptive statistics.

These are charts of the frequency of 52 week highs [52 WK Hi] and 52 week lows [52 WK Lo] 10 days before [T=-10, t=-9,…,T=-1] and 10 days after [T=1, T=2,…,T=10] the [1] February 23, 2017 and [2] January 4, 2018 comments by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The actual event date of T=0 is included.

First, focus on the left side charts for both trade event date periods. In both cases, trading days preceding U.S. Attorney General public comment had a higher incidence of 52 week highs BEFORE, and a lower incidence of 52 week highs AFTER the event date.

In the most recent case or the lower left chart, a January effect was in progress, but in its infancy. (Still, a bit of January effect momentum “slipped through” after the event date.)

In the earlier case or the upper right chart, a January effect was “charging through” February, unhampered, before the public statements. (Just as a recent correction is taking place in the general market, folks were waiting for and anticipating some event to put an end to the January effect increase of about 51% for the month of January 2017.)

Second, focus on the right side charts for both trade event date periods. In both case, trading days preceding U.S. Attorney General public comments had a higher incidence of 52 week lows BEFORE, and a lower incidence of 52 week lows AFTER the event date.

In both right hand cases, U.S. Attorney General Jess Sessions remarks does not appear to have generated new 52 week lows.

Below is the raw data used to construct the above charts. It provides the incidence of 52 week highs and 52 weeks lows in a 21 trading day period surrounding U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions remarks. This is a non-parametric approach, which is less powerful than a parametric alternative, but the latter would take a few hundred hours to produce and the results are so strong that it is not necessary. Below is the raw data used to construct the above charts. It provides the incidence of 52 week highs and 52 weeks lows in a 21 trading day period surrounding U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions remarks. This is a non-parametric approach, which is less powerful that a parametric alternative, but the latter would take a few hundred hours to produce and the results are so strong that it is not necessary. Thee r measures is a non-parametric form of the Pearson Product Moment correlation, for the 21 trading days surrounding and including the event date.
