This is the forum for daily political discussion on Seeking Alpha. A new version is published every market day.

Please don't leave political comments on other articles or posts on the site.

The comments below are not regulated with the same rigor as the rest of the site, and this is an 'enter at your own risk' area as discussion can get very heated. If you can't stand the heat... you know what they say...

The one guideline we do still require strict adherence to is refraining from personal attacks on fellow commenters. Regardless of which side of the political divide you find yourself, please be courteous and don't direct abuse at other users.

Justice Gorsuch and other conservative Justices are talking about reducing the ability of media outlets to publish false reports and especially those meant only to score political points. While the liberal NYT and WP were mentioned in the article I read, will the good Justices also rule that it applies to all publications?

@tewright2012 The Supreme Court previously ruled that the FCC's Fairness Doctrine was constitutional; nonetheless, the Reagan Administration revoked it.

If it were put back into effect, opinion news like Fox, OAN and Newsmax would probably go out of business, and divisive conservative talk radio would be shut down. The right wing extremists would go nuts and probably lay siege to the FCC's headquarters.

@tewright2012 It should apply equally to Fox and Newsmax, same as WaPo and NYT.

Does anyone know what glorious plan Trump and Pompeo had for dealing with leaving Afghanistan? I frankly think their policy of bending over for the terrorists was not a good plan as the main terrorist is now the new Afghan leader. And despite the view of at least one person on this board, the Taliban is not a freedom loving group. I also suspect, as many have stated, that fighting a land war, with no coherent strategy, in Asia is foolish.

t
@maillot jaune I am not at all surprised that you would avoid answering my question but we know that Biden and his team miscalculated the ability or willingness of the Afghan military. Now back to my question and no waffling or diverting.

@tewright2012 personally, I think they would have delayed based on it being unsafe for the citizens of Afghanistan to pull out. Good chance we would have had a presence through 2024 if DjT was still POTUS. Not saying it's good or bad, just believe the can would have been kicked down the road. Pulling out is always a mess when you are under pressure from rebels or the unrelenting enemy.

@Entropy4Free Enjoy.

This forum is turning into an extreme-right echo chamber. So glad I can just stay away whenever I want and that I don't live in some god-awful backward state like Florida or Alabama.

After Tennessee vaccine official Dr Michelle Fiscus asserted that someone had mailed her a muzzle in an attempt to intimidate her, it subsequently emerged that the item was purchased with a credit card in Fiscus' name.

Fiscus, who was fired from her role as Tennessee’s vaccine chief, originally claimed that someone was trying to get her to “stop talking about vaccinating people” and had sent the muzzle as a threat.

This prompted health department official Paul Peterson to alert the Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security and a full investigation was launched.

However, according to Axios, evidence clearly suggests that Fiscus purchased the item herself.

"NEW: A Tennessee investigation found evidence that the state's fired vaccine chief Michelle Fiscus, who claimed that someone had mailed her a dog muzzle in an attempt to intimidate her, had in fact purchased the muzzle."

— Axios (@axios) August 16, 2021

"The Tennessee Department of Safety & Homeland Security found through a subpoena that the Amazon package containing the muzzle traced back to a credit card in Fiscus' name," states the report.

"When asked by investigators, Fiscus provided information for an Amazon account in her name. It was a different account than the one used to purchase the muzzle."

"The investigation concluded that "the results of this investigation that purchases from both Amazon accounts were charged to the same American Express credit card in the name of Dr. Michelle D. Fiscus." Fiscus denies purchasing the muzzle and is claiming that someone else made the Amazon account in her name and stole her credit card details.

Fiscus herself recently complained about vaccine hesitancy amongst white conservatives.

"Our most hesitant population in Tennessee is the white, male, rural conservatives," she told PBS. "They feel that if they get the vaccine, then they have placated the left."

But we must always trust the experts, trust the doctors.

Great shades of Jussie Smollett, Batman!
Not too original.
Big Tech and big social media have already tried censorship by committee with Facebook's oversight board and the decision to permanently bar former President Trump from the platform. Now, they're circling back to good old fashioned mob rule.

Twitter on Tuesday announced that it's preparing to test a new feature that will allow users to report any COVID misinformation they spot on the platform. Users can already flag content they deem inappropriate (including misinformation). This new feature will allow them to specify the type of misinformation (is it political, perhaps COVID related?). All of this information will help twitter's algorithms justify its removal from the platform more expeditiously, saving more readers from being exposed to harmful information that might lead them to question the official narrative.

And with President Biden now dealing with the embarrassment that was the Afghanistan pullout, this probably won't be the last time a major tech firm ramps up its censorship efforts.

Remember back in the 90s when we thought the Internet would democratize conversation and give a voice to the voiceless?

What a bunch of ******* dopes we were.

It is the greatest tool of propaganda and control ever created by the hand of man. No offense, but if they hit the "internet kill button" tomorrow and we all went back to using carbon paper and fax machines we'd be better off.

Having solved domestic problems like inflation and foreign problems like the complete and total collapse of Afghanistan in minutes after the U.S. withdrew from the country, President Biden is now focused on offering the largest long-term increase in food stamp benefits in the program's history.

The program adds "billions of dollars in costs" to the government, Bloomberg noted in a writeup this weekend. But, in Biden's defense, what are dollars anymore, after all?

Benefits are set to rise more than 25% from pre-pandemic levels for some 42 million people enrolled in the program.

Social Security recipients would like a 25% increase, too.

Inflation is transitory...right!
