This is the forum for daily political discussion on Seeking Alpha. A new version is published every market day.

Please don't leave political comments on other articles or posts on the site.

The comments below are not regulated with the same rigor as the rest of the site, and this is an 'enter at your own risk' area as discussion can get very heated. If you can't stand the heat... you know what they say...

The one guideline we do still require strict adherence to is refraining from personal attacks on fellow commenters. Regardless of which side of the political divide you find yourself, please be courteous and don't direct abuse at other users.

The District of Columbia has filed a civil lawsuit seeking harsh financial penalties against far-right groups Proud Boys and Oath Keepers over their role in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the Capitol by supporters of former President Donald Trump.

The suit, filed Tuesday in federal court, also names dozens of the groups' senior members, many of whom already face criminal charges for taking part in the violent attack on the Capitol building while Congress was meeting to certify the 2020 election results.

Karl Racine, Washington's attorney general, said the suit seeks compensation for damages to the District of Columbia and intends to inflict maximum financial damage on the groups responsible.

"Out intent is to hold these violent mobsters and violent hate groups accountable and to get every penny of damage we can," Racine said. "If it so happens that we bankrupt them, then that's a good day."

Today District Judge Trevor McFadden, a Trump appointee, granted requests from the DOJ and the House of Representatives to dismiss former President Donald Trump's bid to keep his tax returns from Congress, ruling that the Treasury Department could disclose them to the House committee that requested them more than two years ago.

So now the NY AG, Federal prosecutors, and the House of Representatives will all have access to The Donald's tax returns.

The judge also acknowledged that the Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee has the authority to make the returns public.

"Fat Elvis" needs a few more people to attend his Greatest Hits tour (opening act: Bill O'Reilly). The number of empty seats does not bode well for paying off his legal bills, debts, and potential fines for tax evasion.

Don Jr. texted Mark Meadows this during the insurrection: "We need an Oval Office address. He has to lead now.”

That text reveals two things about Don Jr.:

1. He knew his dad was responsible for the riot and failing to lead.
2. He does not have his father's cellphone number.
GreenEggs&Ham profile picture
@Pinguino Investments

He also texted the following to Meadows...

It has gone too far. And gotten out of hand,'

“He’s got to condemn this shit ASAP,”

“The Capitol Police tweet is not enough."

Even Hannity removed his arse from Trumps backside long enough to text Meadows writing:
“Can he make a statement? ... Ask people to leave the Capitol?"
Is Biden Really the Second Coming of F.D.R. and L.B.J.? www.newyorker.com/...

This has really aged well. I notice it was written on April Fools Day this year.
ESPN tweeted out a clip on Tuesday with the caption “Last year, a noose was found in Bubba Wallace’s stall at Talladega Superspeedway” to promote an upcoming E:60 special. That, of course, is a lie.

Last year, a noose was found in Bubba Wallace's stall at Talladega Superspeedway. The next day, the NASCAR community stood with him in unity.

"I was like, 'Holy s—, it's the whole garage.' … That's when I lost it." twitter.com/...
— ESPN (@espn) December 14, 2021

For background, Wallace said he found a noose in his garage during the summer of 2020. Immediately following his claim, networks like ESPN declared NASCAR and white people racist. But as much as ESPN wanted you to think Bubba Wallace was a victim of a hate crime, he wasn’t. The FBI quickly found that no one had put a noose in Wallace’s. Instead, the rope was, well, a rope to help open the garage door that had been there for a long period of time.

ESPN even admitted it wasn’t a noose in June 2020, in a report headlined, “FBI says rope had been in Talladega garage since October; Bubba Wallace not victim of hate crime.”

So ESPN lied, hoping its viewers had forgotten about the story’s outcome.
The truth is, ESPN has been lying about stories to frame black people as victims of white people for over a year.

Why does this keep happening? Why isn’t anyone at ESPN stopping the network from repeatedly spreading lies about societal topics? Sadly, the answer is all too revealing.

ESPN has created a workplace that incentivizes its employees to find examples that white people are racist and black people are victims. And because the demand for such so clearly exceeds the supply, it causes ESPN’s hosts, producers, and writers to reach desperately for proof.

There’s not a network more irresponsible than ESPN right now.these are egregious failures across the network considering how tense the country is now and how many people will never know the truth. The police didn’t murder Jacob Blake, Blake was not unarmed, Kyle Rittenhouse did not cross state lines, the NFL is not refusing to pay black people, and no one put a noose in Bubba Wallace’s garage - all of which a sports network has reported in the past year.

And yet fascist Twitter still allows this tweet today to see the light of day. Tells you all you need to know...

1,. FED will announce tapering at $30B ending in March.

2. Vlad and Xi have to scriot chess moves, stay tuned

3. COVID-O will spread faster in Jan-Feb as cold sets in and will create media and polical hysteria but I think slowdown will be limited at best.

The key will be March case/death couns and when FED starts rasing.

4. Will Joe's next $2-5 trillion pass and die on the vines?

Yup, real windy and it may snow later.
CDC COVID-19 Response Team published a weekly report on Friday where a vast majority of the patients infected with the Omicron variant identified in the US so far were fully vaccinated individuals.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that of the 43 COVID-19 cases caused by the Omicron variants, 34 people were fully vaccinated. Of those fully vaccinated, 14 people had received their booster shots but five of those received their additional shots less than 14 days.

Only 8 people were unvaccinated who got infected with the Omicron variants and 1 person has status unknown.

The CDC added that the “mutations in Omicron might increase transmissibility, confer resistance to therapeutics, or partially escape infection- or vaccine-induced immunity.” This means the vaccines offer less protection against Omicron.

@PIRockford

Yes, maybe true but the symptoms are much milder.

We don't have a vaccine for the common cold do we?

We'll probably end up with COVID-19................COVID-n.

"Vaccines target a specific disease-causing pathogen, such as a virus. One of the difficulties in developing a vaccine for the common cold is there are at least 200 different viruses that can cause cold symptoms, including adenoviruses, coronaviruses, parainfluenza, and rhinoviruses."

@techy46 "We don't have a vaccine for the common cold do we?"

Exactly the point. Why should we call this a vaccine if it means COVID-n?

The White House is preparing for a flood of coronavirus cases to hit the United States in January after federal health officials briefed them with prediction models, according to reports.

“Everything points to a large wave. A large wave is coming,” a senior Biden administration official told Axios on Tuesday, predicting “plenty of hospitalizations” in the months ahead.

The Washington Post reported that top federal health officials from the Centers for Disease Control outlined their latest prediction models showing a large increase in cases and shared them with senior administration officials.

One health official familiar with the briefing described the latest scenario as “daunting.”

“The implications of a big wave in January that could swamp hospitals … we need to take that potential seriously,” the official told the Post.

“They’re considering the information at the highest levels right now, and thinking through how to get the public to understand what the scenarios mean,” the official continued. “It looks daunting.”

Studies show the existing coronavirus vaccines are not as effective against the coronavirus variants but provide some level of protection.

"A 'large wave' of Omicron cases and hospitalizations is coming to the US, Biden official tells Axios

The Omicron variant of the coronavirus will bring a "large wave" of COVID-19 infections and hospitalizations to the US soon, a senior Biden administration official told Axios.

"Everything points to a large wave. A large wave is coming," said the official, who was not named in the report.

"It will be fast. It won't be as severe, but regrettably, there will be plenty of hospitalizations."
