April Dividend ETF Report: Why High-Dividend Funds Are Dominating

Summary

  • This article series covers 94 U.S. dividend and income ETFs. Use it as a one-stop shop to learn about your favorite fund's performance, risk, concentration, turnover, yield, growth, and more.
  • High Dividend ETFs produced a median loss of 3.17% in April, 5.61% better than SPY. They continue to prove why past performance isn't reliable in a fast-changing market.
  • ETFs with substantial exposure to Energy, Consumer Staples and Utilities did well. Real Estate is making a comeback, too, producing a median loss of 4.32% in April.
  • The low-volatility factor was the most important last month. An ETF's growth prospects, no matter how poor, were inconsequential. As a result, SPHD was a top-performer.
  • Keep reading to find out five dividend ETFs currently offering a nice combination of low volatility, low valuation, solid yield, and strong earnings growth.

Nice article. SPG and STOR offer a div yield of 5.5% or higher.

@RMUinFL Thanks very much! I've done eight so far now, but am looking at changing up the format or maybe even focusing on a few of the better ones from each category each month. We'll see how it goes! Appreciate the comments as always. Good luck!

@The Sunday Investor Would love to see your new format include a ranking system for each ETF category (non-leveraged high dividend, leveraged high dividend, dividend growth, dividend + total return, etc.)!

@BamaCajun Thanks for the suggestion! Rankings definitely are in the future, and two areas I'm trying to work out is how to factor in a fund's concentration and turnover in the rankings. I'd probably do it by the 40 categories I've already created though since I don't really deal with leveraged funds. Hopefully it'll happen in the next few months!
