Summary

  • Nothing is certain in life except death and taxes, but also recessions.
  • Given the aggressive Fed, most anticipate a recession in 2023 that can make defensive sectors relatively attractive.
  • Since most anticipate this already, most utilities are still trading at some elevated valuations - sticking with quality like WEC Energy Group, Inc. can still provide long-term success.

Like the consistent 7% per year growth in dividend.

@Wizard19 agreed! Thank you for the comment.

I agree with your analysis. I'm a long term holder of WEC. So long in fact, that my basis is less than $10 per share. Nobody knows where the top or bottom prices for a stock will be, so I wouldn't try to time the market for a long term buyer. It's always tough to make money short term on any stock.

@Bigslix well said! Thank you for sharing your perspective! Also, that's an amazing basis!

Nice article. High priced stock with a low dividend. Not right now.

@jasonjones thanks for your thoughts! Definitely looking at it for dividend growth, not up-front yield.

I am a retired professional engineer with over 40 years experience with electric utilities. Utes are being lead to the slaughter by stupid regulators who are forcing them to go green. The next few years will be telling as rolling blackouts become commonplace.
I’m in the process of installing a home standby generator. According to the installation contractor, their main customers have PV. HSGs provide backup capability at about 30% less than a battery pack (which will only provide 2-3 hours of power).

@mikejack Yikes! I am hoping they stay around for 50 to 60 years!
i
@mikejack That is a big concern. We have the dumbest people in government that make laws on what they know nothing about. . The
" Inflation Reduction Act" is a perfect example. Taxing anything that is a carbon fuel , just to push us into "green", and we are finding that the grass is not greener on the other side. Why don't people know that we would die without carbon? If the carbon footprint gets less than 150 ppm, trees and plants cant grow, and they can take in a lot of carbon and even grow better . Sure, it is possible there can be too much, but we are not anywhere near that. Carbon is fertilizer . Why dont people know that. China,, sure , they need to do something. In Wisconsin,, there is no smog.

I'm a long term holder of $WEC and a buyer at sub mid $94 and a stronger buyer at sub $90. The stock seldom drops below $80 at this level so you have to buy in bunches for a solid awc holding.
