EMC (EMC) said Tuesday that it has rolled out its software as a service strategy, which revolves around Mozy, the product line it acquired in October when the data storage giant bought Berkeley Data Systems.
Specifically, EMC launched Mozy Enterprise powered by EMC Fortress (how’s that for a branding hodge podge). Mozy Enterprise is an online backup service for desktops, laptops and remote Windows servers. To push Mozy Enterprise, EMC is using its channel partners and inked a deal with Verizon Business to offer the backup service. In addition, EMC launched a SaaS business unit.
Parsing EMC’s statement it appears that the strategy is twofold. Make Mozy the SaaS face, but be sure people know that underneath the service is EMC Fortress, an enterprise SaaS platform. EMC added that it plans to deliver more SaaS applications built on its platform.
When EMC bought Berkeley, Mozy was primarily a consumer brand. EMC has beefed up the Mozy service for the enterprise by adding security via RSA, deployment tools, high-availability support services and data protection.
MozyEnterprise will run you $5.25 a month per desktop and laptop plus 70 cents per gigabyte protected. To put a Windows Server on MozyEnterprise you’ll pay $9.25 a month per server plus $2.35 a month per gigabyte protected.
As for the technical details, here are a few bullet points; MozyEnterprise:
- Provides an option to restore multiple file versions up to 30 days ago;
- Backs up SQL, Exchange and file servers;
- Has network drive support to back up networked or mapped drives;
- Backs up Windows Vista and XP, Windows 2003 and 2000 servers;
- Also supports 64-bit Windows and open and locked files such as Outlook PST files.
