Apple Enhances MacBooks, Now #2 U.S. Music Retailer

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) Tuesday morning announced new models in its MacBook and MacBook Pro line. Price points for the notebooks have not changed, but the offering at each price point has been beefed up.

The new models feature faster processors, more memory and higher capacity hard drives. The new MacBook Pros also include the Multi-Touch trackpad that first showed up in the MacBook Air. The MacBook line starts at $1,099 for a 2.1 GHz model. The white 2.4GHz model is $1,299; a black model with a larger hard drive is $1,499. The MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 for a 2.4 GHz model, with a 2.5 GHz model with a 15-inch screen at $2,499, and a 2.5 GHz model with a 17-inch screen at $2,799.

In a separate announcement Tuesday, Apple said it is now the No. 2 U.S. music retailer, trailing onmly Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT), according to data from NPD Group. Apple said there are now over 50 million iTunes customers. The company has sold over 4 billion songs; the catalog includes over 6 million songs.

Apple Tuesday is down $2.68, or 2.2%, at $117.06.
