TickerMine Report: Chili (NYSE:EAT)

Chili's Business Steady; Signature Ribs Remain Popular

Nearly 38% of Chili's locations reported business is up over last year, while 54% say sales are the same. Just 4% said business is down. Of the 26 locations surveyed, nearly 73% indicated that dinner, rather than lunch, is their busiest meal, with a number of responses indicating the location is popular with the after-work crowd. Most (77%) of the stores contacted are near a mall, with other restaurants nearby. 54% of the respondents indicated that the atmosphere is what attracts customers to Chili's, while 27% cited prices. The average check size for a party of two ranges between $20 and $30 at 50% of stores polled. 19% reported a check size between $31 and $40 and 27% stated the average tab ranged from $41 to $50. Menu favorites included baby back ribs (27%) and various burgers (35% overall), including the smokehouse burger (19% ) and Chipotle Blue Cheese Bacon Burger (8%).

Average Check Higher on Weekends; Steak & Crab Cake Favorite Entrée at Ruby Tuesday

We recently polled at Ruby Tuesday locations nationwide about their average check size and most popular dishes. The average weekend check was $49 compared to a weekday check of $34. There was no significant difference between the lunch and dinner check sizes. The favorite entrée sited was the Steak & Crab Cake offering, with 18% of the responses. The Ribs & Louisiana Fried Shrimp was second (15%) while the Ruby Minis & Garden Salad from the Fresh Combinations menu was third (12%).

Cheesecake Factory Reports Short Wait Times, Most Checks Under $50

TickerMine recently surveyed Cheesecake Factory restaurants and found that the average wait time was less than 30 minutes for 74% of respondents. Forty-eight percent of the restaurants surveyed reported wait times of less than ten minutes. The average check size for a party of two is between $25 and $50 at 65% of restaurants, and over $75 at only 6%. Sixteen percent of respondents reported an average check size of less than $25. Asked about their most popular dish, restaurants reported a wide variety of entrees, speaking to the broad appeal of the Cheesecake Factory menu. Mesa Chicken, the Factory Burger, Chicken Romano, and salads (a variety) were all mentioned by 6% of respondents. Chicken dishes in general made up 32% of responses, and cheesecake was named by 16% of respondents.

California Pizza Kitchen Offers Wait Times Less Than Five Minutes, Meals Less than $45

TickerMine's recent survey of California Pizza Kitchen restaurants showed that the chain continues to offer reasonably-priced meals with short wait times. Ninety-three percent of restaurants surveyed said the average tab on a meal for two was less than $45; 33% said it was under $25. The wait time was less than five minutes at 45% of the restaurants surveyed, and only three percent quoted wait times over 30 minutes. The most popular entrees, according to respondents, are the Pesto Cream Penne and Blue Crab Cakes (both at 21%), followed by the Pan Sautéed Salmon, at 15%.

TickerMine Report: Papa John's (NASDAQ:PZZA)

Business Spikes at Papa John's Pizza Stores

Pizza makers, like other restaurants relying a lot on wheat, struggle with high flour prices, but pizza loving Americans keep the demand for this item intact. Tickermine surveyed 25 Papa John's pizza locations across the country in March and found that business was brisk. The Pan-Demonium pizza, also known as the Perfect Pan, was the most popular item cited by 15 respondents or 60%. The deal including two pizzas for the price of one was cited four times or 16%. Fifteen respondents or 60% of those polled felt that business was busier than this time last year. This is almost double from last month's survey. 32% or six attendants reported business as the same while only two people or 8% reported business as slower than before, this is up 5% from our December poll. Papa John's is a leading player in the pizza industry but has competitors. 14 respondents or 56% viewed Dominos as their biggest threat. Pizza Hut was mentioned five times or 20% and Donatos was cited twice or 8%.
