Capt. Spaulding spent 35 years in the research vineyards of Wall Street, primarily as a financial writer and editor specializing in economics, equities, and technical analysis. During that time, he learned that several adages are well worth keeping in mind. One is, don't buy it if you don't understand it. Another: numbers can, and often do, lie. A third: if something seems too good to be true, it is. And for good measure: don't fight the tape, especially on the downside, because the market knows more than any individual investor does. Capt. Spaulding is retired, and enjoys the challenge of trying to keep his head while those around him are losing theirs.
Still working but planning to retire in my mid 50's (in the next few years). Interested in high dividend (6%+) stocks including BDCs, REITs, MLPs, etc. Prefer to buy cheap and get paid while I wait for the price to increase. Also interested in high-yield bonds.
My husband and I each have a DPhil from Oxford University. Mine is in Cell Physiology and his in Bio-Organic Chemistry. He has been working in pharmaceutical research for over 20 years. We invest in companies which have solid science, and avoid those whose science, we estimate, to be weak. We think that biotech companies can fail for many reasons; but none can succeed without solid science.

I am a former senior executive with global responsibilities for a Fortune 50 firm and the holder of a doctorate degree in business. For fun, I developed and teach an executive education program focused on strategy at a world renowned business school.
I have been self-employed for the majority of my adult life, most recently as the owner of a Brick and Mortar used book store whose property my wife & I sold in 2007 when we semi-retired.
Since then, my wife and I have continued to sell books at a reduced volume online and have authored e-books as well as publishing scarce out-of-print Public Domain titles in e-book format. Our e-books are mostly non-fiction in the area of 1) U. S. Civil War, 2) U. S. Indian wars; especially those in Texas & on the Great Plains, and 3) Texas History; both as a Republic and as a state. Our e-book titles can be found by a Google or other search of my name---Harry Polizzi---for any SA readers that may be interested.
I have beed investing since the early 1960s, when commission costs on trades were astronomical and detailed information on companies was hard to come by. The Internet has made garnering company information much easier, but finding long term quality companies that pay and will continue to pay/raise dividends to provide a rising stream of income to present/future retirees, remains the difficult trick.
My main focus is to uncover these quality companies that pay, and more importantly will continue to pay the dividend income investor a (hopefully) rising stream of dividend income. For those investing for retirement income or those in retirement who need more income, my articles will outline stocks that may help reach those two goals. Occasionally I will focus on an overlooked special situation that promises to fit this same bill.

I've been a casual equity investor for the last 10yrs but have had less than stellar success. Recently, I left my job of 13yrs to escape the NE for the mountains of CO with my wife. After a 4 month round-the-world trip and much introspection, I've decided to put a little more rigor around my investment practices. I enjoy reading about all matters of personal finance and economics and have recently added Dividend Growth Investing as a passion. While not a holy-grail, I feel putting more focus on dividend investing will force me to put the time into building a sound investment strategy based around more metrics and less emotion. The attention to detail and consistency in approach that many DGI investors on SA on other sites display also gives me more comfort that there will be intelligent like-minds to lean on as I season myself with the concepts.
I hope to contribute what I can to the community, as soon as a have research, tools, and/or opinions that might help others.
