Well the European elections are over and the French Front National swept the board in the elections and has called for the Nationalisation of Alstom and the dissolution of the National Assembly as being unrepresentative as the ruling Socialist party was humiliated.
Immelt may have addressed the National Assembly, in English, which does not go down well with the French. But the French cabinet have now called a crisis meeting to discuss these events. Selling a well loved national company, to Americans of all people, would do the Socialists even more damage.
In my view the likelihood of GE being allowed to go ahead with this acquisition is now a non-runner.
However as a matter of personal ego he will likely still press on with this power trip regardless of what we the ordinary shareholders think.
If this fails, as I believe is likely, then if he were an honorable person then he would admit his mistake and fall on his sword and re-sign....though without any lucrative golden parachutes which would be funded by the shareholders at the end of the day.
