Some of the relatively early developments in clinical testing included instruments aimed at assessing aspects of mental impairment such as might arise from brain damage. One such was the Bender Visual Motor Gestalt Test (1938). Errors made in copying abstract designs formed the basis of assessment. In addition to modern equivalents of such instruments, clinical psychologists today make use of psychometric tests aimed at specific conditions.
However, there are some overlaps with the occupational field that are worth considering. A number of personality measures have their origins in clinical testing and seek to relate clinical dimensions to behaviours in the non-clinical world. One general result of this is the presence of anxiety, emotional stability or stress-tolerance scales in standard personality measures, such as the 16PF in its various forms, the OPQ and Gordon’s Personal Profile and Inventory.
A typical application of these concepts occupationally is to consider if there is an appropriate match between a candidate’s capacity to handle stress and the amount of stress offering in a particular job or role. Although the link is not always made, a useful concept here is the Yerkes–Dodson law according to which an initially benign and positive relationship between stress and performance is followed by a performance plateau as stress increases and then by a performance collapse. The particular course of the relationship between the stressor and the performance graph will vary from person to person and with the particular stressor or combinations of stressors being applied.
There is another overlap between clinical and occupational testing in the increasingly recognized field of post-traumatic stress. Stemming from the realization that those who come across stressful events in the course of their work may need some support has been the development of various measures of the effects of stress. One such is the Measures in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (Turner and Lee, 1998). Such instruments are used as aids to diagnosis and hence as precursors to treatment or management of the condition. Additionally, output from some measures, such as the PTSD one, may provide evidence in support of litigation.
