Just some history....

Sept. 17--Thursday`s freeze caused significant damage to the state`s soybean crop, while also hurting many of the state`s cornfields, University of Minnesota agronomists said Friday.

"Because there were so many fields that had significant loss, (yield losses) could be as bad as 10 percent of our total production overall," said Seth Naeve, the U`s soybean specialist. "It may be worse. That`s a hard thing to say."

Naeve and other U crop specialists have scouted fields in different parts of the state and found wide variation from field to field. Fields planted later than usual suffered the most damage -- and this year, many fields were planted late because of a cold and wet spring.

The corn crop was a bit closer to maturity, and the damage there doesn`t appear to be as severe. Nevertheless, corn yields will also suffer from a frost and freeze that came two or three weeks earlier than usual.

"For a lot of cornfields, we can safely say, the growing season is over," said Dave Nicolai, a U extension crops educator, who had scouted fields in Sibley and Nicollet counties.

Minnesota farmers were expected to grow about $11 billion worth of corn and soybeans this year. So the early frost could mean a major financial hit, because the cold covered so much of the state.

Weather maps show that temperatures in most of Minnesota fell below 32 degrees Thursday morning. Areas of 28 degrees were not uncommon.

But not everywhere was frosty. Much of the Twin Cities dodged the

frost, though barely. And in the Moorhead region, temperatures stayed above freezing.

"We were the warm spot," said Phil Glogoza, the U`s extension crops educator in the Moorhead region.

Jeff Coulter, the U`s corn specialist, concurred that "much of Minnesota`s corn crop was damaged by frost." For corn, he said, a killing freeze occurs when temperatures fall below 32 degrees for four hours or below 28 degrees for minutes.

Nobody can say precisely how severe the statewide freeze damage was. That will become clearer in the weeks ahead, as fall harvest begins. But it is fairly widespread.

Growing soybeans "is a 7 million-acre deal in Minnesota, and it doesn`t have to affect yield very much to have a huge impact on total production in the state," Naeve said. "Most frosts we get are real spotty. But this one came in and just got us all."
