Should You Invest In REITs In 2021?
Yes, you should. We're doing it too.
REITs are among the highest-yielding stocks out there in an environment where investors are hard-pressed for yield. Interest rates are still ultra-low, and Fed projections say the Fed funds rate is going to hang out here for a while. Treasury and corporate bond rates are also at or near record lows.
Now, that doesn’t mean we’re yield-chasers… far from it.
But if you’re looking to generate some decent income from your investments in 2021, REITs are one of the best places you can park your cash right now.
Plus, you get to invest in real estate without plunking down a hefty down payment, paying property taxes, or dealing with the hassles of being a landlord (no trash, toilets or tenants to harsh your vibe!).
Colorado, what about the pandemic? Hasn’t it crushed retail and office REITs?
Quite a bit. You wouldn't know it from the valuations there though. The market was much too bearish a few months ago, and today it has allowed several retail REITs to recover much too far.
Fortunately, there are many other alternatives for investing in REITs.
Plus, we’ve got a ton of exposure to mortgage REITs and preferred shares, so we’re fairly diversified within the REIT universe.
How about that track record?
Well, we hate to brag, but our performance through year-end 2020 was pretty stellar:
We thoroughly beat the four major indexes covering our types of assets:
MORT - Major mortgage REIT ETF
PFF - The largest preferred share ETF
VNQ - The largest equity REIT ETF
KBWY - The high-yield equity REIT ETF most retail investors follow
