OurPet’s Co. (OPCO) takes Bite of Booming Pet Industry with Strategic Positioning

Ohio-based OurPet’s Co. launched its operations in 1995 with the development of Big Dog Feeder and has since developed a successful line of pet products catering to the health, behavioral and lifestyle needs of pets.

The company has 52 granted or assigned U.S. patents for its dog and cat feeders, as well as 54 U.S. patents pending for cat and dog toys, dog feeders, and natural and nutritional pet supplements and treats.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the pet industry is the seventh largest retail segment in the country. The industry overshadows the toy industry by 60 percent, and is 33 percent larger than the confectionary industry, supported by sales of $41.2 billion.

In a rapidly growing and competitive industry such as this one, brand recognition and market saturation is key. To capitalize on this opportunity, OurPet’s offers its products through several brand names retailed in a wide array of big-name pet stores, including pet specialty stores, mass retailers, grocery and drug chains, catalogs, e-commerce and more.

Apparently, the strategy is paying off. The company recently reported record financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2010, posting 25 percent fourth-quarter increase in revenue at $4.6 million. Net revenue for full year 2010 increased 20 percent to a record $17.0 million.

The company faces 2011 with optimism for continued success in the competitive industry, with stated commitment to pursue its growth formula, including product innovation, brand development, aggressive marketing and sales, and strategic acquisitions and partnerships.
