On Friday, Cleantech Transit Inc. announced that the previously announced 500 KW biomass gasification facility located in Merced, California successfully passed their interconnection tests. The facility is now connected to the utility distribution grid.

The gasification technology uses a non-combustion process to convert Ag and other woody residues into a hydrogen rich gas (syngas). This syngas then undergoes conversion into electricity, along with heat and biochar. Biochar is a useful byproduct; it captures carbon in solid form and is useable as a soil amendment.

Essentially, the Phoenix Energy technology used at Merced cooks the biomass in an oxygen-deprived environment to release the elemental gasses from the wood. In the process, biomass converts into a carbon rich biochar. With the carbon fixed in solid form, this process provides a valuable soil amendment. Furthermore, this process also serves as a source of carbon sequestration.

Mr. Ken Bosket, Chief Executive Officer of Cleantech Transit Inc., stated, “We are delighted with the success that Phoenix Energy has had with the Merced project and look forward to working with Phoenix Energy to build a strong partnership.”

The expectation is that the Merced plant will produce enough electricity to power approximately 400 homes. The plant connected to the electricity grid under the State of California’s feed-in-tariff with a 15-year power purchase agreement.

Headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada, Cleantech Transit Inc. was founded to capitalize on technology advances and manufacturing opportunities in the growing clean energy public transportation sector. They have recently expanded their focus to invest directly in specific green projects that can maximize shareholder value.
