Microsft (NASDAQ:MSFT) reported acquisition of the professional network Yammer for $1.2 billion makes a lot of sense. Microsoft could benefit from integrating its Skype program into Yammer and offer professional teleconferencing which currently costs companies thousands of dollars.
In addition, Microsoft could use Yammer to take on the ailing mobile handset maker Research in Motion (RIMM). Research in Motion has a decreasing influence with business users. A new Windows 8 for mobile phones that Microsoft is bringing to market this fall, a new office, and a professional network could replace Research in Motion as the preferred business phone platform.
Overall, acquiring Yammer should be beneficial to Microsoft and could also provide the company with additional ability to attract business customers for its product portfolio.
