Begin with the corrosive structure of identity politics or what I refer to the politics of disunion and its operating philosophy of I am right, you are wrong and compromise is not an option because it inexplicably is seen by its proponents as degrading their personal value system, move on to the absurdity of extreme political correctness and the twenty-four-hour news/entertainment cycle where ideological journalism is the passport to employment and where compromise is not associated with long-term tenure, top it all off with the addiction of social media where opinions are often not informed or evidence based and you have a prescription for and ever-increasing dysfunctional society that appears to be devouring its own.
Bismarck once suggested that “Politics is the art of the possible, the attainable- the art of the next best”. Economic and political and social justice issues cannot move forward without compromise and I would argue that those of us that inhibit compromise by our actions are impeding the very implementation of the goals we champion.
