I am 42 (as of 2018) and have worked in IT for around 17 years. Many years ago, I graduated college with a degree in computer science, right into the "dot com" bust. So, from the very beginning I have always been very paranoid about employment. To alleviate my anxiety, I started keeping an emergency fund.
Eventually my emergency fund grew to two years of living expenses in cash. At that point I decided to switch from holding cash to owning assets that generated cash flow. As time went on those assets grew and now I am very close to financial independence just from my non-retirement investments.
I have recently decided to start keep a monthly "financial diary" of my non-retirement investments. So you can take a look at my blog posts to see what I am currently invested in.
