The V.C. Summer Nuclear Plant in South Carolina exited a mid-cycle outage last week after repairs to back-up pump seals.

Operators took the single-unit plant offline on March 22 after a pump's seals were not performing as desired, South Carolina Electric & Gas said in a release. Crews completed repairs, along with additional maintenance, ahead of schedule Tuesday.

The reactor was back to full power on Thursday, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Two days after it shut down, a lightning strike caused a voltage disturbance in an offsite power source and prompted one of the plant's emergency diesels to start, according to an NRC event report. The generator, as well as a safety-related chiller and ventilation fans, were reset without incident.

The 966 megawatt plant operates a Westinghouse pressurized water reactor first licensed in 1982
