Russian "Sharks" Still Circle American Waters

A few days ago, two Russian Akula class submarines were found operating just off the U.S.coast in the Atlantic. Akula is the Russian word for shark. This is reminiscent of a time when German submarines did much the same in 1942.

America won a de facto, not de jure victory, in 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed. Unlike Nazi Germany, Russia never acknowledged that we won. Nor does it feel any obligation to abide by the terms of that "victory."

The main reason that Russia is weaker than the former Soviet Union is because the latter entity lost half of its people, and a quarter of its territory, when the other Soviet "Republics" left. It no longer has the potential to go tit-for-tat with the United States in a major war. But the fact remains that "half" of the Soviet Union is still a powerful country in its own right. And as it recently demonstrated, it is still a force to be reckoned with, at least in combination with others, such as China.
