I would like to bring to everyone's attention that on Monday, June 29th, 2009, the Capital Link Shipping Indices were launched. These indices track all U.S. listed Maritime Stocks. The indices track the shipping sector as a whole, as well as several segments of it, such as dry bulk, tankers, containers, LNG/LPG, mixed fleet and Shipping MLPs.
The indices are market cap weighted and their history goes back to January 2005, thereby providing investors with sufficient data history.
These indices will definitely facilitate investor following of shipping stocks and I've already found several brokers, etc. using them in reports, as well as just referencing them. They are updated daily at 4:30 pm EDT.
For example it is interesting to compare the indices to the BDI, or to other broader transportation indices or to individual stock performances.
The indices can be found at www.CapitalLinkShipping.com or www.MaritimeIndices.com where you can also download historical data and find all details regarding index methodology and index composition. They are also available on Bloomberg at page "CPLI" and will soon be on Reuters.
