Seeking Alpha Analyst Since 2009

Michael J. Clark was born and raised in Sinclair, Wyoming. He is a poet, novelist, artist, historian, and market analyst. He began investing in 1985. He read ˜The Technical Analysis of Stock Trends" by Edwards and Magee and was hooked. From 1985-1987 he made astonishing gains in the stock market; and then stocks collapsed in 1987. Since then he has been attempting to 'solve the stock market', with many failures and some successes. The system he developed, called CGTS, Clark's Gate Timining System, is algorithm-based. What this fancy word means is that he proposes a series of necessary steps based on technical analysis propositions, which, when met, trigger trading signals. His four main trading systems are up a combined 31% for 2015. From his website: INVESTMENT PHILOSOPHY Now that QE is supposedly ending, markets are already becoming more tradable, with opportunities to make money on both long and short trades at the same time. QE tended to make all boats rise, except precious metals. This made it more difficult to play the short side of the markets. Now, both sides seem to be more accessible to successful trades. This will also be more of a challenge for investors. The FED will have to eventually abandon the markets to their own destinies, and stop spending trillions to protect investors AND corporations from their mistakes. As this begins to happen (I am not sure it has happened yet), informed advice will become even more necessary for investors. Rules of Investment Rule #1: Never go against the trend. The majority is often wrong; but the minority is often wrong also. The sticky issue with this advice is at transition points, at which a Bull Market turns into a Bear Market or vice-versa. Big Money often anticipates and/or causes this transition. So pay attention to what Big Money is really doing, not what they say they are doing. Rule #2: You don’t need a broker who makes his living off of your money. Most brokerage firms buy a position in a stock quietly and slowly. When the stock has appreciated significantly they add the stock to their buy recommendations. Then they begin selling their position while they are encouraging their clients to buy the stock. Most firms never issue sell recommendations. If they do, beware: they are probably trying to buy your stock after a huge sell-off. Rule #3: Watch your own emotions because they are often signaling something. When fear turns to greed and visions of unlimited wealth, we are probably near a top in a trade and we should get ready to sell. When hope and denial turn to fear and visions of an unlimited loss, we are probably approaching a bottom in a trade. (See Rule #1 however.) Rule #4: Trade with a system to complement your gut reactions. Follow the system no matter what, even if it means taking a loss. Don’t get lazy with your money and sink into denial. Use a system to help you refrain from 'playing a hunch'. Rule #5: HEDGE YOUR PORTFOLIO AGAINST LOSSES. How does one do this? By having a balanced portfolio of long and short positions. But have a system that signals both long and short positions, and keep your portfolio balanced around 50% long and 50% short. This may seem to contradict Rule #1. It does not. When something is in a long trend, something else is in a short trend. Find what is long and what is short. If stocks are long, gold or oil may be short. Use ETFs and options to help establish this portfolio balance. Our system gives trading signals every day for both long and short positions. CGTS WEEKEND: WHAT ABOUT GOLD?

Jul. 12, 2020 6:00 PM ET•GLDComment!

I have avoided talking about GOLD a lot recently. Although our best system is reminding us that BUY GOLD STOCKS is its latest favorite theme.

What about gold and gold stocks? I link all discussion of gold to the GOLD-DOW RATIO which I believe the most compelling TRUE chart in the world.

Dow to Gold Ratio

Here is an earlier tract I wrote about Gold/Stocks and the Day/Night cycles of trading.

CGTS BONUS: GOLD/DOW RATIO, HOW A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS -- GOLD BULLS BEWARE; TIME MAY BE RUNNING OUT - Michael Clark

Ok, so here is/was my view when I wrote that. To my eye, the DGRatio is a pure picture of Historical Cycles. Stocks SHOULD go down from 2001-2019; and GOLD SHOULD go up.

* WESTERN PERSPECTIVE

Day in the West = Night in the East

• FED delays Deflation 2010-2019

This proved to be true again, until the FED found a formula for perverting the cycle. "Print" massive amounts of money NOW (borrow it from the future), to spend today, to thwart DEFLATION. Which it is still doing, in fact.

OK; we know that.

What happened to gold in the middle of all this? GOLD topped in 2012. This was NOT supposed to happen.

Gold recovered, began to recover, in 2016. And stocks also went higher in 2016. What about cycles?

Looking at the GOLD chart above, note that every time EXCALIBER hit +1, GOLD CORRECTED. A very THICK EXCAL means that BUYER STRENGTH endures longer than expected.

It is quite uncanny how EXCAL +1 "predicts" a coming downturn. Let's look more closely at recent action.

Is this a TOP in gold?

This works not just with gold but with all stocks. AMGN, for instance. EXCAL does not "predict" every top, but most of them.

Is GBTC topping? Not according to EXCAL.

Let's look at SP500. Every +1 preceded a fall. EXCAL is not +1 today for GSPC. But it is for GLD.

Let's look again at the DG RATIO. It looks like a topping chart still. Is that what it is? If the DG RATIO breaks down out of the symmetrical triangle it is currently forming, then gold should rally and stocks should fall.

If the DG RATIO breaks up out of the symmetrical triangle it is currently forming, then gold should tank, and stocks should rally.

TA tells us there is CONSIDERABLE DOUBT when investors confront Symmetrical Triangles. They can go either way.

They can go either direction.

Genetically speaking, when STOCKS GO UP, GOLD is supposed to GO DOWN. And the CYCLE was SUPPOSED TO END in 2019 -- stocks bottom, gold tops. But the FED played with FIRE.

If the DG RATIO goes up, stocks go up and gold goes down (historically this is true). If the DGR goes down, stocks will fall; and gold will continue to rise.

Believe it or not, this chart shows a long-term upward trend channel in favor of stocks.

Both stocks and gold look (technically) STRONG. Gold is hitting RESISTANCE now at 168.14 (GLD). Note how 168 marked the end of the GLD road in 2012.

CGTS FRIDAY: WHAT ARE THE MONTHLY TRADING SYSTEMS SAYING? - Michael Clark

Macro suggestions (from the news) are that stocks are doomed; gold is going to soar. That may be true; but news is almost NEVER predictive. Is NEM topping? No.

I have the feeling I am not going to be able to answer my own question about gold. Gold stocks are strong. Which direction is gold going? Short-term, up. Intermediate-term, anyone's guess. NOT ENOUGH INFORMATION. I DON'T KNOW. (Am I supposed to admit that?)

HUMANA.

KOLD.

This fact of EXCAL hitting +1 is NOT a sell signal; but it should make one cautious. If you are in the mood to take profits, take them here.

Your will notice that EXCAL falling back to -1 from ZERO is also a sign that not enough buying power exists to climb the mountain to +1.
