The Daily Look, EOD, Closing Bell, 9/13/11

End of Day, Cause and Effect, so what’s causing the rise or bounces?

US stocks Tuesday, 9/13/11 ended higher for the 2nd session as investors took comfort from a relatively low volume of negative headlines about Europe. The Dow was up 44.73 points, or 0.4%, at 11,105.85 at the close of floor trading. The S&P 500 gained 10.60 points, or 0.9%, to 1,172.87. The NASDAQ rose 37.06 points, or 1.5%, to 2,532.15.

Stocks are trading mixed Tuesday in another choppy session. The Dow average and S&P’s 500 index were swinging between small gains and losses. Fear of the unknown makes markets especially volatile. Traders seem to be hanging on every piece of news or rumor out of the EU. It’s a difficult environment for a long-term investor. Any news can take you significantly higher or lower.

One should think about Greece’s debt problem as a binary event, like a stem cell company in P3 trial, they are either going to make it or they are not and … in this case it’s up to Germany.

Uncertainty has been driving retail investors out of stocks. Americans pulled $36B out of US stock funds in August, according to preliminary data from the Investment Company Institute. The Dow and S&P 500 have lost more than 4.6% this month amid worries that EU’s debt crisis could … PUSH … theUS into another recession <I don’t think so!>. The US economy is already slowing, and unemployment remains high at 9.1%.
