Stock Research – There Is A Season
As I write this we are nearing the first day of Fall 2009. And the Byrd’s 1965 classic hit, "Turn! Turn! Turn! (to Everything There is a Season)" seems appropriate.
The lyrics are taken almost verbatim from the book of Ecclesiastes. “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” .. which is exactly how I feel every year at this time.
I look forward to Fall and Winter because of what I enjoy most about the changing seasons, and what those shorter days and cold nights give me. They give me the chance to get caught up on all my research projects. Things I would never do in the warm summer months.
One of my interests has always been investing, and the colder months allow me to dig in and do more thorough research. With summer outdoor house chores, family and friends visiting, and stealing away for some golfing R & R, there is little room left for anything else. So yes, ‘Turn Turn Turn’ … there is a season.
In winter I tend to spend more time with the Globe and Mail’s Report On Business section, and more time as well researching stocks online.
I admit that when I start doing company research I often get frustrated because too many online sites seem to have incomplete information. You know what I mean, one site has great charts, another has good historical data, but few it seems offer all the information I need in one place, including the ever important balance sheet.
Normally I have to use 3 or 4 sites to get all the research information I need, but I found this new website called Stock Research Portal. It offers the whole package in one site, and it’s actually free with a simple email subscription.
They focus on Mining and Oil & Gas companies. I like the fact that they segregate all the news releases into appropriate categories. Financing, M&A, Drilling & Discovery to name a few. This alone is a huge time saver. They do seem to put a lot of thought into organizing their data so that any due diligence buffs can gather information easily.
I think you’ll especially like their “Company Research” section. It’s like being inside the best university library you’ve ever visited. Better said, it’s more like visiting a true Learning Library.
