Gold, VMWare and Recent Events

|Includes: SPDR Gold Trust ETF (GLD), VMW

This week we heard that the US payroll data (non-farm) was better than economists expected which gave a breath of life to the markets. The dollar strengthened which which caused Gold to decline from highs to about $949/oz. There was some profit taking in the game, but this price decline for Gold makes it more attractive than before. It is only a matter of time before the dollar plunges from out of control from inflation due to increasing IOU's from Washington. I still think as high as Gold is, it is still a safe bet, along with Silver and Platinum.

  • GLD's 52 week high is $98.99 and 52 week low of about $66.
  • It closed yesterday 8/11 at $92.79VMW -

Recently we heard VMware had purchased a company called SpringSource in addition to news that they parterned with Siemens AG.

The SpringSource philsophy of providing products that fit together in a platform to build, run and manage applications is efficient. On the build side, I believe 2/3 of Java Developers use Spring to develop and a large percentage develop in Tomcat. The problem in the past was IBM and Oracle's application servers (based on EJB technology) were usually used to run applications because Operations needed enterprise like monitoring and support. So with 85+% of the committers on Tomcat at SpringSource, Tomcat was enterprised providing support, monitoring, and management. Now with a strong company behind them they can build the next generation cloud computing and virtualized platforms. Realize that Springsource acquired Hyperic (for monitoring) and a year+ ago they acquired Covalent (Tomcat Expertise).
