Legend Mining (ASX: LEG) has pinpointed three high priority areas for follow up exploration at its Ngovayang Project in Cameroon after receiving positive preliminary results from gold-focused stream sediment sampling.
A total of 231 pan concentrate samples have been collected from an area covering a major regional shear corridor, which is considered prospective for gold mineralisation.
The pan concentrate sampling has identified three priority targets where "clusters" of samples containing anomalous numbers of relatively coarse, up to 2.4 millimetres, gold grains have been observed.
Mark Wilson, managing director, commented: "Our field team has done an outstanding job to cover this large area in our first gold program at Ngovayang.
"The shapes of the gold grains observed suggest a close source and the assays from the coarse fraction in particular, will give a better understanding as to the origin of the gold."
The significance of the stream sediment sampling results will not be fully known until gold and multi-element assays from the "fine" (-2mm) and "coarse" (+2mm -6mm) fractions are returned.
However, the results are considered highly encouraging for first pass sampling.
Twenty five of the 62 samples taken from the priority areas contained more than 10 grains of gold, while a maximum of 137 gold grains was observed in a sample.
The gold grains observed under the binocular microscope ranged in size from 0.1 to 2.4 millimetres, with grain shapes predominantly angular to sub-rounded.
The angular to sub-rounded grain shape suggests that the grains have not been transported far and may be proximal to the gold source.
Wilson told Proactive Investors today the assays of the coarse fraction are important because if Legend identifies gold anomalism in that, it's indicative of the fact that it's widespread gold in the rock rather than just isolated nuggets of gold in quartz veins.
"The results that we've got at the moment are really very encouraging, but not definitive, of a gold mine.
"The work that we have to do now is to really identify the source of this gold."
Follow up exploration
Legend is planning a systematic follow-up program which includes:
- Further stream sediment sampling to better define anomalous streams;
- Geological mapping of streams and anomalous catchments; and
- Soil and rockchip sampling.
Previous exploration at Ngovayang has focused on the magnetite potential of the project.
The project comprises three granted exploration permits covering around 2,970 square kilometres and is considered prospective for iron ore and gold.
Magnetite-gneiss has been identified as the primary source of iron ore at the project.
Previous drilling at the Plateau Prospect has delivered magnetite mineralisation intersections demonstrating encouraging grades of above 25% iron and thicknesses of over 30 metres.
Significant downhole thicknesses of magnetite bearing gneiss ranging from 54.2 metres to 100.4 metres were intersected in seven of the 25 holes drilled.
Highlights from the seven holes include 65.7 metres at 31.3% iron, 77.5 metres at 28.6% iron, and 59.2 metres at 34.1% iron.
Drilling was testing a 2.5 kilometre portion of a regional 10 kilometre linear aeromagnetic feature associated with outcropping magnetite gneiss.
Independent consultants, Golders Associates, have been appointed by Legend to conduct a review of the Ngovayang Project.
A senior geologist experienced in magnetite visited the project in August and a high level optimisation report has been delivered to Legend following his site visit and subsequent work in the Golders Perth Office.
The optimisation work was based on the Melombo East geological model and the metallurgical testwork from the Alpha Prospect.
The high level optimisation report indicates the potential of Melombo East, should the magnetite mass recovery and concentrate quality be similar to the sighter testwork from the Alpha Prospect.
The review will result in recommendations to Legend concerning future work at the project, especially regarding appropriate metallurgical testwork and drilling to bring Melombo East to a JORC Inferred resource status.
