Biotech & Pharma companies are now realizing that political harassment, what I call the www.biotech-wars.com will never end. Nevertheless, with a focus for many on seeking therapies and vaccines for Covid-19, they were able to postpone an unwanted meeting with the White House on drug pricing. Top pharma executives were supposed to meet with the president.

Portland
Although I am far from an expert on the Black Lives movement, from my perspective, the chaos in Portland does not fit with the efforts of the Black Lives Matter movement. In a prior career I would travel to Portland in the 90’s when I worked at TYCO TOYS, as we manufactured both Magna Doodle® and View-Master® products in Portland at that time. Portland is a beautiful city and was a great place to go on a business trip. Portland is a vastly different city then the more heavily populated Eastern and Midwest cities in America. It is my view that the recent chaos in Portland has more to do with socio-economic issues then race. The racial breakdown of Portland is also significantly different than a city like Chicago or Philly (below). Time will tell, but 100+ days of social unrest and protest will only lead to more heartache. I very much wish that all in Portland work toward a peaceful solution to the issues facing them and remember that you all live in an exceptionally beautiful place. It saddens me to see all the rioting and now the fires in such beautiful country.

What I am seeing in many American cities with large Black populations is sad and depressing. From my perspective, the BLM movement is being hijacked and to a large degree superseded by a combination of anarchists/thugs/opportunists/progressives who are looking to create greater societal and economic changes in America and are using the cover of the Black Lives movement to make their case. The “defunding the police” effort in my view was/is not the main priority of the BLM movement based on my understanding of this movement, where changes in Police tactics, improved interactions with the communities police serve and training police to deescalate situations is their focus. The political silence in NYC by the mayor reveals much and is frustrating to anyone who really cares about NYC as a major financial, business center, and a place to live, work, and visit. Riots and destruction help no one and hurt any city and will only further deteriorate and ostracize American cities. What is also becoming clearer is that today’s technologies no longer require centralized business centers, the decentralization of many businesses is occurring already. The “Markets” already see this and will support those that continue to find ways to move forward in locations that bring success, no matter where in America and/or the world they are. Lacking a clear political path toward resolution on these social unrest issues businesses will work around this situation and re-allocate resources and funds toward solutions that will work for them. No business or population of any race can succeed in an unsafe/unstable environment, hence they will move/reallocate resources to find a new place to thrive. For American cities and for the smaller businesses in these cities, all of this will now take much longer to resolve and significant efforts to fix. This is a sad outcome for America regardless of who is President. Political leaders that neither support their businesses or their own police will not be able to move forward successfully.
