Energy Merchants Hunt for LNG

Energy merchants are scouring global ports for supplies of liquefied natural gas that can help compensate for lost Japanese nuclear-power generation.

LNG is gas that has been super-cooled to liquid form to be shipped around the world on tankers, and it is a major source of power in Europe and Asia. The U.S. has a steady supply of domestic gas and isn't a major LNG importer.

Simon Henry, Royal Dutch Shell PLC's chief financial officer, told reporters Tuesday that the firm is "looking around the world" for available LNG cargoes it could send to Japan. Shell had two LNG carriers
