Stock Market News Update for Thursday, September 23, 2010

Thursday saw U.S. stocks stumble in the final hours of a lackluster session and ended near session lows, as nervous investors weighed a surprise jump in weekly jobless claims with a better-than-expected reading on the housing market.

Also, the stocks staggered lower as investors expressed some anxiety over a round of disappointing data from the euro zone. Not only did Ireland's second-quarter gross domestic product shrink unexpectedly, but the composite purchasing managers' index (PMI) for the euro zone backpedaled to 53.8 in August -- confirming suspicions of an economic slowdown in the region.
