The Most Republican Companies In The Country (It's Not The Kochs) Are…

The Upshot, the new data and explainer-driven content channel from The New York Times (NYT), published a very funny article today after crunching the numbers from the Center for Responsive Politics' database for corporate donations.

The most Republican company in the country is the company that makes Wonder Bread.

Flower Foods (FLO) is surprisingly partisan for a publicly traded company. Usually, corporations try and keep their politics personal-lest you step into a heap of scandal like Brendan Eich, Mozilla Firefox's former CEO who gave $1000 to support Proposition 8 in California.

If you make a good product, there's no reason why Republicans and Democrats wouldn't be equally likely to purchase it. What would a company that makes sandwich bread-as opposed to, say, a media company-gain from ruffling feathers?

But Flower Foods is incredibly Republican. Since 1979, the company's political action committee (NYSE:PAC) has given 99.9% of its money to GOP candidates. Only a single Democratic congressman from the company's home state of Georgia shows up on the list. And that was a one-time donation in the early 90s.

Democratic-leaning companies are much less one-sided. The most Democratic company in the country is Citizens Financial, but it's only given 77.5% of its total contributions to Democrats. Even Google (GOOGL), which one would imagine to be as progressive as they come, splits its money pretty evenly.

We built a list of the top publicly traded companies featured in The Upshot's article. Heavy machinery, oil, and food companies like Flower Foods dominate the list.
