Lost in Imitation: AEO Copied in China

|Includes: American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (AEO)

A recent New York Times article “Economic Indicator: Even Cheaper Knockoffs” points out that after years of knocking off luxury products, criminals are discovering there is money to be made in faking the more ordinary.  For example, in California, the authorities recently seized a shipment of counterfeit Angel Soft toilet paper!

To that point, our Summer intern (Cindy Jin) discovered Ameri Eagle while shopping in China last week.  The clothing design and the logo look very similar to American Eagle (AEO – $12.68).  The flying eagle in its original logo version on the American Eagle brand is flying from East to West, and in its imitation logo version the Ameri Eagle brand eagle is flying from West to East.

AEO announced its plans to open three stores in early 2011 in Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai.  Ironically, Ameri Eagle might be their competitor in China.
