BP plc (NYSE:BP) said that it had set aside an additional $7.7 billion for expenses related to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, mainly because of a delay in the completion of the relief well that permanently sealed the leak. The pretax charge, which followed $32.2 billion set aside last quarter, contributed to a sharp drop in profits for the multinational oil giant. For the third quarter, BP earned a net profit of $1.79 billion, down from $5.34 billion a year earlier.

BP p.l.c. provides fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, retail services, and petrochemicals products. The company operates through two segments: Exploration and Production, and Refining and Marketing.
