I'm a die-hard Blackberry fan. As always, I preface my writings here at SeekingAlpha by stating that I have two sportscars, one in NYC and one in the midwest, which have "BBRY" as the license plate. I have designed and printed many Blackberry themed t-shirts, such as "Back to Black" and "Only the Beginning Z10".
The departure of Richard Piasentin is very encouraging. I met Richard at the launch event and he seemed nice enough, but the marketing effort in the USA for BB10 was abysmal. Either he left because his marketing program stunk and he was fired, or he left because he wanted to do more and was not given the tools. Either way, it's tentatively encouraging. Let's imagine that it means they are going to rebuild marketing, and let's imagine that they can actually recruit the talent they need (big imaginings for sure).
The next big event is going to be the 10.1 software upgrade which will bring background notification capability to BB10 OS. If they can get this right at Blackberry, then this is when we will see Banking and Stock Trading Platform apps appear (if they appear at all).
The 10.1 software push is said to be already available for AT&T customers (that's me). See the below link for more information on the 10.1 update availability.
If Banking and Stock Application(s) for US entities do not appear after the 10.1 software upgrade has been made widely available, then that is really the end of Blackberry as we know it.
Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, but may initiate a long position in BBRY over the next 72 hours.
Additional disclosure: Any long position will be a January 2014 or later option.
