The Egyptian government has arrested three people who were believed to be smuggling weapons to Gaza. Four arms caches were discovered in the Sinai Peninsula.

As the authorities raided seven different places they found about 100 kilograms of TNT, 110 aircraft missiles, artillery shells, and handmade grenades.

Sources have said that these were wanted individuals and were of significant importance to the government. An Israeli newspaper has reported that the weapons appeared to include Russian-made SA-7 missile.

Newspaper Haaretz reported that “the missile commonly known as the Strela, is not generally considered a highly advanced weapon, but its very presence in Gaza could have far-reaching implications for Israeli air mobility over the territory.”

The Egyptian Interior Ministry has announced a campaign to clear the Sinai Peninsula from any weapons, explosives, or arm shipments that are entering into the Gaza strip.

Last month one person was killed and four were wounded as a missile hit the Israeli resort city of Eilat.
