USA Blacklists Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan

Reported By: Soha, CRWE Newswire Middle East Correspondent

The United States has added the Pakistani terrorist organization Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (NYSE:TTP) to the terrorism blacklist.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in a notice published in the Federal Register that TTP threatens US national security. She designated the group as a “foreign terrorist organization” under U.S. law. Clinton further named the group’s top leaders, Hakimullah Mehsud and Mir Wali UrRehman, “specially designated global terrorists”, a classification that will result in the imposition of additional State and Treasury department sanctions on these individuals.

Clinton said further in the notice that each has “committed, or poses a significant risk of committing, acts of terrorism that threaten the security of U.S. nationals or the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States.”

The sanctions enable the U.S. government to freeze any assets of the group or its leaders in any U.S. jurisdiction. It will also make it illegal for Americans to provide funding or material support to them and bars them from entering the United States.
