In The Wall Street Journal by Sara Murray (Obstacle to Deficient Cutting: A Nation on Entitlements), Sept. 15, 2010 ({FP} pg. A1\6). A record number of Americans are receiving some form of financial assistance at a time when the government is struggling with a $1.26 trillion deficit, the second biggest on record. Opinion polls show that while Americans are concerned about the rising deficit they are opposed to benefit cuts. Many European countries are facing the same deficit hurdles and are beginning to make cuts to entitlement programs. The biggest concern to U.S. government officials is that the number of individuals on Medicare is expected to double over the 20 years as the baby-boom generation retires. (Charlene A.
