China Drunk on Bordeaux

In The Wall Street Journal, by Kimberly Peterson and Jason Chow (New Whine: China Pushes Bordeaux Prices Higher), Sept. 15, 2010 ({MP} pg. B1\2). The Chinese have developed a taste for Bordeaux and wineries are cashing in. The Bordeaux region experienced near perfect growing conditions helping produce a wine that may be the best tasting and most expensive wine ever bottled. The Bordeaux region has several local rules governing producers which help influence the quality and price of the wines from year to year. Bordeaux is unique in that a percentage of the wine is sold before the wine is ever bottled through futures contracts allowing emerging countries to outbid traditional wine drinking countries.
