Stealing Europe

In The Wall Street Journal, by Patrick McGroarty (Stealing Across the Border), Sept. 16, 2010 ({FP} pg. A19). Auto thieves are becoming increasingly more active along the area that borders Germany and Poland. The establishment of the Schengen Agreement which allows citizens free access between the two countries is largely to blame. Criminals sneak across the border in the evening and steal luxury autos and farm equipment. The criminals then race to Russia where modifications are made before being resold. German and Polish law enforcement officials are countering the thieves by joining together in a cooperative auto-theft taskforce. (Matthais Rattei, Thomas de Maiziere, wsjreview.com).
