Bad Cookies

In The Wall Street Journal, by Jennifer Valentino-DeVries and Emily Steel (‘Cookies’ Cause Bitter Backlash), Sept. 20, 2010. ({MP} pg. B1\2). Several lawsuits have been filed against companies that specialize in creating on-line tracking devices known as cookies. Cookies allow websites to remember specific details about visitors. Two recent court rulings supported the use of cookies by companies. However, plaintiffs argue that new ‘cookies’ technology has surpassed the scope and intent of the original court decisions. At the center of the argument is the belief that deleted cookies are re-created without the user’s knowledge or permission.
