As a result of the continued economic downturn prolonged by the forcing of austerity measures on the Greek government by the troika, Greeks are feeling the pain of significant cuts to their social net and significant increases on their taxes. This combination has squeezed millions into poverty. In fact, many Greeks cannot afford heating fuel so they now are resorting to raiding woods and forests for wood to burn for warmth. This has been so prevalent that it has led to significant air pollution and an increase in blazes throughout the country!
Moreover, protests have continued throughout Greece. Recently, Greek workers marched to Parliament to protest "upcoming pay cuts for transport workers and the government emergency decree that forced subway employees to end their strike."
