BioSante Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:BPAX), announced positive safety data in its ongoing LibiGel Phase III clinical development program.
BioSante reported that with 2,869 women enrolled and over 3,000 women-years of exposure in its LibiGel Phase III cardiovascular and breast cancer safety study, there have been 17 adjudicated cardiovascular (NYSE:CV) events, with a lower than anticipated event rate of approximately 0.57 percent. There have been eight breast cancers reported, a rate of approximately 0.27 percent.
Therefore, the Phase III LibiGel (testosterone gel) safety study will continue as per the FDA-agreed protocol, without modifications including continued enrollment of new subjects. This was the recommendation of the independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) based on its 5th unblinded review of all study safety data. LibiGel is in development for the treatment of female sexual dysfunction (NYSE:FSD), specifically, hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in menopausal women, for which there is no FDA approved product.
Subjects have been enrolled in this study for an average of 12.5 months. More than 1,000 subjects have been enrolled in the study for more than a year and over 550 subjects for more than two years. The periodic reviews by the DMC are based on their mandate in accordance with FDA agreement on protocol-defined study oversight. BioSante’s objective is to submit the LibiGel NDA for a product launch in 2012.
BioSante is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on developing products for female sexual health and oncology. BioSante’s lead products include LibiGel® (transdermal testosterone gel) for the treatment of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) which is in Phase III clinical development under a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Special Protocol Assessment.

National Health Partners, Inc. is a national healthcare savings organization that provides discount healthcare membership programs to uninsured and underinsured people through a national healthcare savings network called “CARExpress.” CARExpress is one of the largest networks of hospitals, doctors, dentists, pharmacists and other healthcare providers in the country and is comprised of over 1,000,000 medical professionals that belong to such PPOs as CareMark and Aetna. NHPR’s primary target customer group is the 47 million Americans who have no health insurance of any kind. NHPR’s secondary target customer group includes the millions of Americans who lack complete health insurance coverage. NHPR is headquartered in Horsham, Pennsylvania.
The uninsured pay out more for care-and acquire less-than those with insurance. However , if the uninsured are unable to pay, health care providers switch those costs to individuals who can pay-those to whom have insurance coverage. This leads to higher costs for those who buy the insurance on the specific market, as well as staff who get insurance plan for themselves and their own families through their occupation. The need for affordable healthcare alternatives has never been greater.
The access to affordable healthcare in the United States has become a luxury for some, althought still subject to a seemingly arbitrary matrix of things. Government insurance products are available for the elderly, the permanently disabled, children from low-incomes, and those with failing kidneys. But how poor do you have to be to be eligible actually varies from state to state and also from year to year. Workers at most of the large businesses and many small ones can take advantage of class insurance plans negotiated simply by their employers. However millions of people who operate in low-paying service, retail or perhaps contracting jobs must seek individual insurance policies, which may be unaffordable or perhaps unavailable because of their professional medical histories. Others acquire insurance with insurance deductibles so high or insurance plan limits so small that an illness or one bad accident could leave them broke.
