IBGE: Brazilian unemployment rate in 2010 is the lowest since 2002

In 2010, the unemployment rate in the six major metropolitan areas in Brazil ended the year as the smallest since 2002, beginning of the series from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).

The level of unemployment fell by 1.4 percentage points compared to 2009 and stood at 6.7% on the average of 12 months, according to the Monthly Employment Survey, released on Thursday (27).

The unemployed population last year was estimated at 1.6 million, 15% less than the number recorded a year earlier. The number, according to the institute, is still 39% lower than the the one measured in 2003.
