Seeking Solar

|Includes: First Solar, Inc. (FSLR), TSL

I must say that President Obama's State of the Union speech sparked my interest in the alternative energy sector heading into the year 2011.  Ever since Obama unveiled plans to allocate over $2 billion to American companies in the solar energy industry, I have been intrigued as to the potential growth these companies could experience within the coming years.  As a recent college graduate, I have novice investment experience.  However, I would like to begin assembling my portfolio with speculative plays based upon personal macroeconomic views.  I am bullish on the sector as I believe the US government will continue to invest in alternative energy sources, in turn stimulating job growth.  While the Dow saw its best first month of the year, in the past 14 years, it still was outperformed by the solar sector.  First Solar rose more than 18 percent month over month, while Trina Solar rose almost 11 percent.  The question that I wanted to pose in my first ever posting on Seeking Alpha, is to see how people feel about my bullish instincts on the solar sector.  And in addition, what opinions knowledgable investors have about how strong the correlation between oil prices and solar energy really is, since questions have been raised regarding this matter.  Finally, I wanted to get ideas on how civil unrest and uncertainty in Egypt will in turn affect the volatility of oil prices and the outlook on the solar energy industry.  I appreciate anyones thoughts or words of wisdom.  I am looking forward to being an active participant/blogger on Seeking Alpha and learning from knowledgable, experienced investors.

Disclosure: I have no positions in any stocks mentioned, but may initiate a long position in FSLR over the next 72 hours.
