Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) -1.2% premarket after shares are downgraded to Neutral from Buy with a $101 price target, down from $116, at Goldman Sachs. Citing fears that sales in China will slow as the manufacturing sector stagnates and that commodity prices are set to drop, Goldman "no longer see(s) upside to consensus earnings expectations." Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and Siemens (SI) each have the freedom from today to whatever they want with their 50% stakes in their Nokia Siemens Networks joint venture without the other firm having a veto. Siemens plans to exit NSN this year, although what Nokia will do is more uncertain. "We believe that Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) will launch the iPhone 5S at China Mobile (NYSE:CHL) this July, as it launches the next iteration of the iPhone globally," writes Wedge Partners' Brian Blair, without elaborating on his sources. The remarks comes a little less than 3 months after Apple and China Mobile signed a confidentiality agreement. Blair sees a 5S model supporting China Mobile's TD-SCDMA 3G network likely entering production in May. (WSJ report)
Surface RT (NASDAQ:MSFT) sales "have slowed considerably in the last month from an already anemic pace" and could be below 50K/month, according to Detwiler Fenton's checks. Surface Pro sales are a little better - Detwiler estimates a Q1 tally of 300K-500K - in part due to limited competition from PC OEMs. The firm is counting on the launch of Windows Blue (expected to support 7" tablets) and Office's touch-friendly Gemini updates to give Windows 8 Pro tablet sales a lift. Apple (AAPL +0.7%) plans to start "production of a new iPhone similar in size and shape" to the iPhone 5 in calendar Q2, setting up a "possible summer launch," the WSJ reports. The paper adds Apple is working with manufacturing partners on a cheaper iPhone with a 4" display and "different casing" than the iPhone 5, and that a 2H launch for the device is possible. Both scoops mesh with iPhone rumors (I, II, III) that have been floating around in recent months. Samsung's Galaxy S IV, replete with a 5" display, is expected to go on sale in late April and May (depending on the market).
