- EFC, TWO:
Two Harbors (TWO +0.1%) tops Credit Suisse's list of mREITs (NYSEARCA:REM) to own given the new rate environment - considerably more favorable now that the yield curve has steepened. Hybrids in general offer better risk/reward than agency-only names, says CS, which also likes Ellington Financial (EFC is a partnership, not a REIT, but EARN is a REIT and is run by the same team). The analysts also like the specialized business models at Newcastle (NCT), New Residential (NYSE:NRZ), and PennyMac (NYSE:PMT).

Italy's Senate has rejected a proposal to cancel the government's plan to spend €11.8B on Lockheed Martin's (NYSE:LMT) F-35 fighter jets over 45 years from 2015, although the chamber has agreed that parliament should have to approve any further purchases of the planes. The discussions come amid much bitterness over austerity in Italy, although they may not have much of an impact as President Giorgio Napolitano has said the decision to buy the aircraft rests with the government, not parliament.

AT&T (NYSE:T) responds to T-Mobile USA's (NASDAQ:TMUS) Jump smartphone upgrade plan by launching its own monthly installment/early upgrade offering, and Verizon Wireless (VZ, VOD) might not be far behind. AT&T Next lets users pay for devices via 20 monthly installments, and with no activation/upgrade fees. Unlike Jump ($10/month, no contract, 2 upgrades/year) there's no additional monthly fee, but there is a service contract requirement, and a 12-month wait between upgrades. Meanwhile, a leaked Verizon slide suggests the carrier is about to launch VZ Edge, a plan that combines installments with the option to upgrade after a device is 50% paid off.

Apple (AAPL) is talking with TV networks and cable providers about a service that would let users skip ads and compensate networks when they do so, sources tell former WSJ reporter Jessica Lessin. However, she adds it isn't clear how the feature would differ from the ad-skipping abilities of DVRs. Bloomberg recently reported of a pending deal to give Time Warner Cable subs the ability to watch via Apple TV. Also: The Korea Economic Daily reports Samsung (OTC:SSNLF) will produce Apple's A9 CPU, via a 14nm process, starting in 2015. The report comes shortly after ones stating Apple will tap TSMC (NYSE:TSM) to make 20nm chips in 2014, and (if true) suggests Apple is going for a dual-supplier strategy.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has built a smartwatch prototype, and plans to release versions featuring removable wristbands and a type of aluminum that's 80% transparent, AmongTech reports. The site adds Microsoft's watch will use a custom version of Windows 8, and (thanks to 4G connectivity) won't need to be paired with a smartphone. The Verge, which seems to have a good Redmond source or three (previous), confirms some of the details. The reports come a day after the FT reported Apple is ramping its iWatch hiring, but cautioned the device might not arrive until 2H14. The WSJ reported Microsoft is working on smartwatch designs back in April
